What you’ll be doing:

How do you make a submarine combat system environmentally sustainable? The challenge we face each day at BAE Systems as we progress the design build of multiple submarine programmes. Here at BAE Systems Submarines we have a team of environmental specialists within each of the programmes providing environmental advice, support, guidance, and instruction to ensure that environmental considerations and requirements are embedded and achieved.

As a Senior Environmental Specialist. You will be involved in a wide remit of environmental activities with responsibility for gathering, assessing, and reporting the environmental information that will help demonstrate the environmental case for each submarine combat system. You’ll contribute to report production by providing sound environmental and technical justifications.

You’ll provide sound and clear environmental guidance to projects stakeholders. You’ll implement our Design for the Environment process or the MoD’s POEMS process dependent on the customer requirements, looking for opportunities to minimise and mitigate environmental impacts and risks through design.

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

• Understanding of environmental assessment and ability to consider and assess environmental aspects across the lifecycle

• Ability to evaluate environmental and technical data and provide environmental guidance to others

• Good report writing/presentation skills and ability to develop and convey environmental justifications

• Knowledge of Environmental Management Systems and Plans - e.g. ISO 140001, POEMS

• Key contributor to the successful delivery of environmental projects

Desirable:

• Experience within Defence and/or Engineering sector

• Good stakeholder engagement and influencing skills

• Knowledge of environmental legislation and defence environmental standards

• Good understanding of one or more of the following: Materials Technology, Environmental Legislation, Disposal and/or Net Zero

The Integrated Combat Systems Product Environmental Team:

Your role will form part of the wider Integrated Combat Systems Product Environmental Team and involves work across several programmes including Astute, Dreadnought, Vanguard and SSN-AUKUS under the supervision of the relevant project environmental lead.

As the Senior Environmental Specialist, you will be working across multiple Submarine Programmes at different stages of their lifecycle between initial concept, through manufacturing to delivery to the customer with opportunities to have a positive impact and influence on the submarine’s design and environmental performance.
