WHAT WE ARE SEEKING
Director of Sustainability
A passionate individual for architecture and sustainability and an influential member of the senior leadership team of the firm, the Director of Sustainability will further evolve sustainability within the firm's practice and support integration of sustainability into the full portfolio of JCJ projects. Individual will leverage knowledge and expertise to lead JCJ's inhouse Sustainability Working Group and provide sustainability thought leadership across our all offices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate education and adoption of sustainability design best practices; support project teams in developing appropriate sustainability strategies and on methodologies to achieve goals; enable and support post occupancy evaluations and lessons learned.
- Establish firm-wide standards and processes related to sustainability; work across director level functions that have responsibility for project delivery, design, documentation and technical standards and information technology.
- Collaborate with teams to plan and implement sustainability approach for all project that uses metrics such as EUI to track performance on projects.
- Assist teams with reporting for AIA 2030 Challenge, manage firmwide response to the AIA 2030 Challenge.
- Manage sustainability reviews of the project, monitoring quality and compliance with contract deliverables, including specifications; facilitate solutions to address design, documentation, and construction challenges.
- Enable in-house analysis of thermal performance, daylight / sunlight, embodied carbon, etc.
- Advise on developing scope and fees for sustainable aspects of projects; assist in writing and review of sustainable aspects of marketing proposals and provide support for award submissions.
- Serve as Sustainability consultant to project teams; manage the project sustainability certification process.
- Seek opportunities for collaboration and represent the firm at external events as a speaker.
- Coordinate training and mentorship on sustainability to all levels of staff.
- Research and disseminate sustainability knowledge across the offices, via virtual and in-person meetings.
- Facilitate discussions with clients and assist teams and work with clients in establishing sustainability goals.
- Build upon existing and update firm-wide Sustainability Action Plan; expand the existing tools and processes in support of wider adoption of green design principles and achievement of sustainability goals.
- Collaborate with project teams to right size the approach to sustainability for each project, aligning approach with project vision, scope, schedule, and budget; produce projects that have a positive impact on the clients and communities that we serve.
- Manage certification process for third party rating systems including: LEED, WELL, LBC, etc. including working as a certification project administrator, and communicating with clients, designers, consulting engineers, and contractors.
- Other projects as assigned.
Job Requirements and Qualifications
Education:
- 4-year degree required, Master level degree preferred in Architecture, Engineering, Environmental Science or related field.
Training Requirements (licenses, programs, or certificates):
- Licensed Architect/Engineer/Building Scientist preferred.
- LEED specialty accreditation required with additional accreditations preferred (WELL, LBL, etc).
Experience:
- 10+ years professional experience in architecture or applying sustainable design practices in the built environment; candidate must have experience in LEED project management and building performance modeling.
- Well organized individual with demonstrated communication, coordination, and management capabilities; ability to be effective in working independently, as an advisor to project teams and as a member a firm-wide practice-based leadership team.
- Ability to manage a varied portfolio of work and to exercise solid judgement around the broader adoption and implementation of sustainability across a national design practice; Experience coaching, facilitating, mentoring professional staff at all levels and points in their career.
- Experience in presenting and writing on the topic of sustainability; demonstrated effectiveness in representing sustainability in project interviews, project kick-off meetings and sustainability charettes.
- Proven capabilities in developing sustainable design strategies that balance project parameters and help clients realize their goals; experience troubleshooting project needs and value engineering process.
- Strong knowledge of energy codes, energy efficient construction and technical interventions to upgrade existing buildings; demonstrated results in achieving project qualitative and quantitative objectives.
- Understanding and analysis of carbon emissions (including CO2 equivalents) and embodied carbon.
- Technical understanding of industry processes and software being used to develop and analyze building energy and thermal performance, WUFI/dewpoint analysis and daylight analysis; ability to evaluate new products and systems; experience in effective integration of new tools and processes.
- Direct experience building and leading a team & team initiatives
- Facility in Adobe Suite, Sketchup, Revit.

$120,000 - $150,000 Annually
