Under the general direction of the Energy and Utilities Manager, the HMS Sustainability Manager will be an integral member of the Campus Planning and Facilities (CPF) team responsible for initiating, implementing, and continually improving School's sustainability program on campus and in the labs.

The Sustainability Manager will play a key role in advising the School on how to create and implement strategies to reduce carbon emissions in its operations and capital construction/renovation programs to meet voluntary and mandatory goals established through institutional commitments.

The position will be responsible for leading engagement programs, communications, sustainability initiatives in partnership with relevant departments, supporting sustainable building operation and construction efforts along with networking and benchmarking to share and reapply best practices with the goal of addressing climate, emissions, and health.


The Manager develops and executes comprehensive project plans, proposes innovative ideas, strengthens, and creates relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including, senior leaders, research administrators, facilities managers, staff, and students and leverages best practices in change management. The Manager will be responsible for envisioning and executing policies, programs, tools, and resources aimed at building a culture of sustainability.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead HMS Sustainability Programs
    • Envision, develop, and maintain HMS "Sustainability & Decarbonization Plan" and strategy to meet Harvard Climate Action Plan Goals.
    • Create and track sustainability metrics and indicators, and develop annual and Mid-year program reports, as well as Annual Sustainability reports
    • Plan and execute sustainability-themed programs, campaigns, events, and communications.
    • Lead the integration of best sustainability practices into Commencement and White Coat ceremonies along with supporting other campus events.
    • Plan and execute "Green Lab" certification program in close coordination with HMS research community
    • Plan and execute "Campus Waste Management" program in coordination with school's administration and campus stakeholders
    • Actively support and leverage the ideas and energy of students and staff to promote HMS sustainability program
    • Develop and lead the student sustainability programs
    • Create new tools, resources, campaigns, and use new best practices to further HMS sustainability program
  • Manage HMS Sustainability Communications
    • Lead the process of selecting/procuring and establishing a web-based HMS sustainability platform (GRITS?)
    • Continuously add/update and manage sustainability content on the website
    • Write sustainability newsletters and articles, and share HMS sustainability stories through social media.
    • Plan and lead campus sustainability tours.
    • Present to senior leaders, key stakeholders, students, staff, and externally as needed.
  • Oversee HMS BERDO Compliance
    • Assist HMS management with establishing the GHG reduction schedule
    • Assist Harvard's Environmental Health and Safety group and the Office for Sustainability with BERDO reporting and compliance
    • Ensure timely submission of energy performance data to the Energy Star Portfolio manager
    • Track and analyze HMS energy consumption and GHG emission data
    • Work with third-party verification consultants and COB to ensure the required quality/compliance of submitted information
    • Verify school GHG emission performance over time and suggest corrective actions as required to assure BERDO
  • Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Sustainability, Economics, Urban Planning, Business, Engineering or related discipline or equivalent experience required
    • Minimum 5 years of experience in project development, management & implementation of sustainability or energy/carbon reduction programs.

    Additional Qualifications and Skills

    • Experience implementing sustainability programs in the laboratory research environment is required
    • Professional certification in the field of Sustainability is required
    • Project management skills including diplomacy, negotiation, consensus-building, along with ability to administer/oversee contracts and manage vendors to execute projects.
    • Demonstrated working knowledge of sustainability industry trends, facility operations, and urban planning
    • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to partner successfully with other University schools, departments, and vendors.
    • Proven ability to think critically, solve problems and conduct research and analysis.
    • Self-motivated who can take initiative to resolve problems and must be able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    • Possess creativity, enthusiasm, high energy, and adaptability to initiate new creative ideas and deliver results in constantly changing environment.
    • Requires occasional work outside of normal business hours (including but not limited to student meetings and events).
    • Experience with all Microsoft Office applications
    • Basic graphic design and website development are desirable
    • Data analysis skills are required
    • Advanced understanding of MS Excel, or other information database collection and visualization technologies is required
    • An ability to learn Harvard systems and web software quickly

    This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA , CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA).
