POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Senior Vice President - Legal, the Vice President - Sustainability will drive sustainability strategy and integrate sustainability measures across the Company's portfolio of properties. This person will focus on implementing sustainability initiatives in the built environment and advocate for improvements in new developments, redevelopments and existing properties, with a focus on creating a sustainable and resilient portfolio that will create value for the Company in the face of rapidly changing regulatory and market requirements. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Offer expertise and provide support for initiatives to meet the Company's short-term and long-term sustainability goals and climate strategy, including offering creative, technically sophisticated and pioneering solutions for achieving those goals
  • Develop forward-thinking initiatives, practices and tools to facilitate efficient and timely implementation of:
        • Reductions in Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions across the portfolio, including through implementation of renewable energy projects and establishing carbon neutral/net zero goals
        • Reductions in energy consumption, water consumption, landfill waste and increase in recycling across the portfolio
        • Net zero, low carbon and sustainable design and construction in new development and redevelopment projects
        • Healthy building strategy through WELL/Fitwel programs
  • Work with and proactively manage third-party vendors responsible for energy or carbon projects and coordinate ASHRAE audits and other property audits as appropriate
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of assets to track asset performance and understand risks to and opportunities for the Company's sustainability plan
  • Develop and track internal KPIs and progress toward the Company's sustainability goals on a quarterly basis
  • Drive portfolio sustainability budget creation in close cooperation with segment leaders, and understand property level budget impact
  • Review and track capital budgets for sustainability and work with project and asset managers on development and tenant improvement projects to maximize incorporation of technologies and practices that promote sustainability on a financially feasible basis
  • Assist with capital planning relating to conservation measures and review carbon neutral/net zero projects
  • Work closely with the Company's other ESG professionals and contribute to the Company's ongoing collection, management and analysis of sustainability data that will be included in the Company's ESG reporting initiatives and support the cross-functional ESG reporting team
  • Identify incentive programs and assist internal teams in obtaining and maximizing those incentives, and reporting on them as necessary
  • Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies in order to identify opportunities to improve sustainability
  • Build effective partnerships with external organizations, vendors, local jurisdictions and community constituents to support the Company's sustainability efforts

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Sciences or other relevant fields from an accredited college or university; Master's or other advanced training in a relevant field is a plus
  • Minimum 8 - 10 years of demonstrated experience in managing sustainability programs in a commercial real estate setting (REIT experience a plus)
  • Track record of successfully implementing cutting edge technologies and processes in other sophisticated commercial real estate portfolios
  • LEED AP preferred
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work well cross-functionally under pressure, as well as balance and execute on multiple deliverables
  • Superior time management and project management skills with ability to efficiently complete tasks independently
  • Experience with energy management systems and energy monitoring and reporting, including ENERGY STAR
  • Experience with building certifications including LEED, WELL/Fitwel
  • Advanced Excel skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and strong competence using other relevant software tools
  • Willing and able to travel at least 30-40% of the time
