The County of San Mateo's Office of Sustainability (OOS) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Sustainability Specialist I/II/III - Schools. We want"sustainability champions"with experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We are looking for candidates with excellent project management and communication skills to lead initiatives and help our employees, community partners, and community members take meaningful actions on sustainability. Currently, we arehiring two extra helpSustainability Specialists for the Waste Reduction Team and Communications Team. One position will be responsible for supporting the Office of Sustainability Schools Program and the other position will be split between the Schools Program (50%) and the programs associated with the Communications team, such as the Youth Exploring Climate Science (YECS) and Youth Climate Ambassador (YCA) programs (50%). The ideal candidate will: Have a background in the areas of solid waste management, recycling and composting, and/or environmental education. Knowledge and/or passion to teach about the impacts of climate change and climate action centered around San Mateo County solutions. Have experience in educating students, youth, and/or community members. Have general knowledge of various academic content standards for California public schools such as the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core Standards. Have knowledge of current waste management laws and regulations such as AB 939, AB 1826, and SB 1383. Have experience working closely with residents, businesses, and/or government agencies to manage their garbage, recycling, and composting service. Be able to speak effectively, make public presentations, conduct outreach, training and/or public education as necessary to a variety of different audiences. Be able to incorporate environmental justice concepts that include the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color, in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a project or initiative. Have worked effectively with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Possess strong organizational, time management, and project management skills. Have a strong commitment to public service and serving San Mateo County community. Have initiative, drive, and follow through to ensure all necessary tasks are completed on time with little supervision. Have strong communications and writing skills. Job Duties for the Sustainability Specialist - Schools Program (Extra Help) Reporting to the Waste Reduction Program Manager, the Sustainability Specialist will be responsible for supporting all aspects of the OOS Schools program. These duties will include, but are not limited to: Conducting in-person and virtual assembly presentations and classroom lessons on the 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot) and other resource conservation topics to all ages from preschoolers up to college students. Leading hands-on classroom vermicomposting (worm composting) and school garden composting workshops. Facilitating teacher-training and youth-training workshops on various sustainability topics. Leading and facilitating field trips to transfer stations, landfills, and recycling facilities. Supporting Youth Exploring Climate Science (YECS) program field trips and classroom presentations (online and in person). Promoting and supporting school and classroom certifications with the Green Star Schools program (). Assisting school staff, green teams, and/or students with campus-wide and in-classroom waste assessments. Assisting with the development and dissemination of quarterly e-newsletters and other outreach materials. Assisting with the development of curriculum focused on the 4R's, including lesson plans, activities, and games. Accurately recording and tracking education efforts for annual reporting to the State Responding to inquiries via phone, email, and website. Entering classroom, school, and district data into the Green Star Schools website. Working on other sustainability-related projects with schools, libraries, youth organizations, local governmental agencies, etc. Coordinate with partner organizations such as the San Mateo County Office of Education and South Bayside Waste Management Authority (RethinkWaste) on projects and programs as needed. Supporting and assisting student-led waste reduction projects and other student-led YECS and Youth Climate Ambassador (YCA) Projects as needed. Staffing tables representing the Office of Sustainability at community events such the County Fair, Maker's Fair, etc. Support event coordination and logistics efforts for the YECS and YCA Program. Support and co-facilitate YCA Program workshops. Support the maintenance of the Schools Program website. NOTE:These positions are extra-help, at-will assignments, paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment. Extra help employees are also limited to a total of 1,040 hours per year. These positions will be spending most of the time in the field (schools and field trip sites) and will not have a regular presence in the office. Candidates are expected to work from home and have reliable transportation to travel to and from school sites as needed. Qualifications Knowledge of: Principles and practices of program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Principles and practices of contract management. Principles, practices, and trends in the assigned specialty areas of resource conservation. Technical information in the assigned specialty areas such as waste reduction, recycling and composting, construction and demolition, renewable energy, energy efficiency, climate action, planning and adaptation, water conservation, active transportation, affordable housing, commute alternatives, environmental education, and community engagement. Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations. Skill/Ability to: Plan, implement, and evaluate assigned programs, projects, and activities. Coordinate multiple functions and contracts. Supervise permanent, temporary, contract, and volunteer staff on a project basis. Serve as subject matter expert in assigned areas. Work with a wide variety of people at all levels including those from government, business, private, and non-profit agencies, community groups, and the public. Identify problems and resolve them. Track and monitor compliance with pertinent mandates, laws, codes, rules, regulations, and agreements. Develop and conduct outreach, public education, training, and media activities. Research and analyze information/data to formulate findings and recommendations. Serve as representative on various boards, committees, and community groups. Prepare comprehensive reports, letters, and other written materials. Provide information in regard to planning, developing, and monitoring the budget. Establish and maintain effective working relations with others. Integrate race and social justice considerations into work duties. Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is: I Level: Bachelor's degree in environmental science, public policy, biology, natural resource management, ecology, or a related field. II Level: One year of experience in the field of resource conservation which has included program analysis and coordination. III Level: Two or more years of journey level program coordination experience, including coordination of resource conservation or sustainability program(s) that comprise broad range of area.
